Various 3AM updates

Just came back from a long drive… its 3AM… thats not an excuse for but instead a preface for what follows..

First, I’m crushing skulls at Rocbattle. Despite that I lost my first battle. To a wack beat. I was always a rocbattle skeptic.. I still am.. the site seems a little cheeseballish and geeky.. whatever. I won’t lie, I was convinced after I checked out Postman’s book that I need to at least play around with it. (check out postman’s book if you haven’t – www.liveoffbeats.com – the book is very basic and short and simple, yet, given the subject matter, that is perhaps its greatest allure) Postman’s book, which discusses strategies to entrepeneurially approach beatmaking utilizing the internet, explicitly references rocbattle.com as a key website for promotion. Although I’ve only been there 3 days, I see what he means. The network of producers there is stagerring. All those producers can add up to a lot of page views + downloads, which can only result in positivity. I’ve already ran into a handful of producers who are familiar with my work. One of them said I helped to craft his style. I will never fade. Nonetheless, my ultimate point is that I’m going to be frequenting rocbattle for a while and I hope you come join me

Second, wtf is up with PMP (check me out www.pmpworldwide.com/soleternity). I get subscribers, but few of them contact me. The ones who do contact me tend to be either over-serious freshmen to the game or making a lot of big promises.. I upload new beats regularly, but I don’t see any true promotional avenues to my soleternity site there. Why go there if you want a Sol track? Soundclick has over 200 of mine, pmp can have a max of about 20 at a given time (give or take a few). What advantage does it have to the listener?? I see the advantage to the producer.. access to the supposed A&R track dumps, etc.. but where are the success stories of placements thru the track dump?? the sites been going for long enough now, there should have been some. Something seems a little better than it is. And I don’t like how they auto-deduct $50 from you every month even if you only signed up for a 1 month period. It works tho, it kept me around for a few extra months. But I think I will step down, I just don’t see the benefit of the site. Maybe soemeone can show me the light.

Third, Let it be known that I will be entering the beat=leasing game hardcore. I have my strategic producing alliances in place.. you know the lowkey solo soldiers I role with.. none of that groupy shit.. just the bosses habitually putting out illness.. Dj JB anybody?????? Kaz1?????????????????? Imagine a pool of beats from not just one producer, but three of your favorites from online history.. when you say dj jb and kaz1, you’re talking about the ceaser and alexander the great of online beatmaking.. JB has the most signature sound in history.. and his sample flips are tremendous.. Kaz1 is the supergenious half-dre half-dilla beast.. oh yeah and don’t forget the Soleternity :) :) :) :) :) :)

Alright, that will do for now.. Read my next blog too, its brand new, and could be very beneficial to you

40 New Beats.. 20 Days.. Back to #1

Whats good?? I’m back with a vengeance. I am here to demolish the online competition yet again. It takes one listen to know that I have refined my skills and my hustle to the highest level. I am bringing a new sound and a new vision to the music business. In this 40 beat update (which will be divided into 2 beats a day for 20 days) I am coming with a variety of styles: hip hop, R&B, pop, techno. All 40 beats are top 40 material. All 40 beats could be on the top 40 at the same time–I never make the same beat twice. Thats one way that I challenge myself is to always reinvent the wheel each time I go to make a beat. After 7 years of crafting tracks nonstop, I have to keep myself interested by challenging myself and always doing something new. It may not be the most practical approach from a business perspective, but I also consider that if I challenge myself and constantly experiment and search, I carve out a new niche for myself and I remain unique. So maybe it is wise from a business perspective.

Nonetheless, here go the first four beats (Today is Feb 2nd, 2 x 2 = 4). You can hear them by clicking on the soundclick player below my song descriptions:

04 Beat So Lonely. This track was originally a beat for a remix to Tupac’s song “Dear Mama.” The 2pac acapella I had did not contain the hook vocals, only the verses, and tupac’s part of the hook. As soon as I took on the remix, I knew I would have to come with a hook. I listened through some old vinyl I had recorded into the computer and I stumbled into this vinyl. I knew I wanted to let the sample run on the hook and flip it for the verses. I just started pitch shifting and flipping and chopping and then I layed in my drums. I finished it off with some of my own melodies and instruments, then gave it a dramatic ending with a new flip of the sample and a cool outro. The track is structurd to have two 24 bar verses, as was Pac’s original.

 03. Times R Changing. I made this one random night in Atlanta. I was locked away in my studio and I had just finished a recording session with Bone Crusher. I doubt that Bone would ever do a song to this beat, but I had just caught the vibe from the session. I had about an hour before I would pass out, so I just turned on all the synths, laced up a quick funky drum pattern, and went to work. I didn’t put much thought or process into the beat, I just let the creativity flow. I don’t know what type of song to put to a beat like this, perhaps something soulful, or something completely opposite, something hard and raw and grimy.

02. Venom. Another random night in Atlanta, I just caught a vibe and ran with it. I never touched it after the first session. You can tell I was really into the vibe because I started creating breakdowns and chord progressions at the end of the verse section, but I never added a bass to it. I was just vibing out. But I like how it sounds like that. I had forgotten about this beat for a long time, I kind of unconsciously discarded it because I felt like it didn’t have a defined hook. I was wrong though. Being too critical. The hook is nasty. This beat is knocking. I love the live guitars I added to it too. All those subleties make it compelling.

01. Penitentury Chances. This beat was originally a remix for the game godz and young buck. I did a few different versions of the remix and another seemed to match the song better, which freed up the beat. I made this beat very recently. I love the dark cinematic feel of the drums and strings. I wanted to give it a mafia-esque intro mixed in with a desperado/rider type of feel mixed in with the ATL quake. Someone could really merk this with a dope simple commercial catchy song.
